The Kungoni Cultural Centre, on the lovely, shady grounds of Mua Mission (first established in 1902), comprises a museum devoted to the culture of Malawi, a research centre, botanical gardens, a carving workshop renowned throughout Malawi, an art gallery and a wonderful hostel to accommodate visitors.
The Namalikhate Hostel sleeps 20 in 10 twin bed African chalets – beautifully decorated with outstanding carvings from the Kungoni workshops. Accommodation is on a bed and breakfast basis, but a fully catered option is also available. The restaurant overlooks the river below and serves delicious simple meals either indoors or outside on the patio.
Mua is well worth a visit for its unique cultural focus, amazing carvings and natural beauty.
